A canine, emaciated, secured a kennel and discarded like trash, huddled in the cold with fear in his eyes. … That’s the sight that greeted Morgan K. Wednesday night. This pet dog, now named Bowie, was required to the emergency situation veterinarian where he received immediate medical care. His blood work is typical and a parvo and heartworm test are negative.
The diagnosis is purposeful, harsh, starvation.
He weighs in at simply over 22 #. A canine of his breed/age ought to be closer to 40-50 #. Originally we thought he was a pup from his size, however his teeth show he’s most likely closer to two-years-old. He has been starved for so long his growth is completely stunted.
Bowie hasn’t had a good life. When you move too rapidly he flinches and prepares to be hit. When he has mishaps on the floor he flees and hides in horror. But the minute you rest on the floor he remains in your lap and pushing against you as tough as possible. He desires nothing however love and to please you.
We hope that Bowie will get to go to foster on Monday the 13th. He requires a number of days of close monitoring while his body discovers to process food again. He’s battling some loose stool and dehydration so he has actually been on IV fluids 24/7 till he’s more stable. The biggest worry when an animal is this emaciated is refeeding them. It has to be done in tiny, sluggish quantities, or you risk eliminating them. As much as we wish to feed them as much as they desire, it can be really unsafe.
We expect he will be ready for adoption in 4-6 months after he has gained weight, been neutered, vaccinated, etc. We currently have numerous people who wish to assist, contribute, foster, adopt and support him in his recovery and we’re so happy.
So, how can you help?
1) Share his story on social networks to find who is accountable. Someone, somewhere, knows something. We are dealing with WPD to get video surveillance and bring to justice the 2 individuals who threw him away.
2) Contribute to his care. It will be several months of repeat blood work, medication and check outs to ensure his organs are functioning and he is thriving.
