How I Taught My Pet Dog to Ride in a Car

My teen pup was terrified of riding in the car when I got him. Here is what I did to get him comfortable.

When eight-month-old Lewis joined my household, he hesitated of riding in the vehicle. He likewise did not like remaining in a cage.

So I put on my best fitness instructor hat, did an assessment, made a strategy, and performed a series of mindful exposures coupled with good food and enjoyable locations. Below, with some commentary, are the steps I took. This is not a basic procedure; there is no generic method that will work for every pet. This is a plan I developed for Lewis. I hope seeing how I tackled this will help others consider their own pet’s circumstance and how to help. For instance, Lewis wasn’t scared of crates; he had actually simply been over-confined formerly. The training strategy would look extremely various for a more afraid pet. He also didn’t get upset in the vehicle. Again, that would require a various method. It would include a trip to the vet for diagnosis and potentially a prescription for anti-nausea meds.

Lewis’ main problem was the fear of the noises and motion of the cars and truck. So I initially got him used to brief durations in the cage with the automobile not running, then gradually added turning on the engine, and finally, driving.

Steps to Riding Happily in the Car

I started with the highest worth food treat that was practical: a Toppl with (unfrozen) peanut butter. I used a Toppl instead of a Kong due to the fact that they are much easier to get the food out of. Exact same factor for not freezing. I wanted him to access that yummy goodness instantly; then we could build a little duration while he licked.

In my notes for this post, I wrote that most of my pictures and video were butt shots. Here’s one. I positioned a peanut butter filled Toppl in the back of the cage and left the cage door open. I lifted Lewis into the cars and truck and put him down in front of the crate. There suffices space for him to walk around a little because location. He sniffed around and quickly figured out where the food toy was. He went partway into the cage, enough to reach the Toppl. I left him that way and left the automobile door open and stood there while he consumed. If Lewis had been terrified of dog crates, I wouldn’t have actually done it that method. My kept reading his situation was that he had actually just spent method excessive time in one. So I gambled that enticing him into the cage would exercise, as long as I didn’t rush to close the door. Using shaping would have been challenging in this enclosed area. You can see in the image that he is very little bothered by the setup. He didn’t leave his back legs throughout the county line.

  • We did this a couple of more times. He began jumping up into the automobile on his own and heading directly into the cage.
  • I changed to letting him go into the crate first before providing the food toy.
  • This wasn’t a part of the training, but I observed he started having a look at the cars and truck when we strolled by it to begin our walks. He sniffed “his” door thoroughly every time we went by it. I was delighted that “the peanut butter vehicle” currently had a magnetic result.
  • Lewis smelling the”peanut butter “vehicle Lewis in his cage while the automobile is running.

    • Clara is there for moral support. The next action was to close the crate door. I bewared to open it once again before he finished the food toy due to the fact that of his confinement concerns.
    • After he was comfortable consuming for three to 5 minutes in the dog crate with the door closed, I sat in the chauffeur’s seat instead of standing at the backseat door while he did so.
    • I repeated the exact same step but added switching on and running the automobile engine. I observed him and the engine didn’t appear to bother him. We did this a couple more times. This is what the brief video programs.
    • It was time to attempt a drive. (Narrator: No, it wasn’t.) I can drive an easy half-mile loop in my area. After Lewis settled in the cage with his peanut butter toy, I got in the chauffeur’s seat. I switched on the engine, took out of the driveway and drove my brief path, taking bumps and corners thoroughly. Oops! Worried whining from Lewis. That was too long a drive.
    • We supported a couple of actions. I began the automobile a couple of more times however didn’t move it.
    • The next time I moved the vehicle simply out to the driveway, and he was great. This is what I must have provided for our first automobile motion. We did a couple of short back-and-forths on the driveway, then remained there with the engine running. After a number of driveway practices, in a couple of days, we attempted the brief drive around the community again. Rating! Quiet licking.
    • I live a mile from another house where we can go play in the backyard. I packed Clara into her own crate, packed Lewis, and drove the 2 of them to the other house, a.k.a. Disneyland. This is where he turned a significant corner. Not just did he get a favorite, high-value food in the automobile, but he got to Go Someplace New and Enjoyable. We did that a couple more times, and riding in an automobile ended up being the golden ticket.
    • A month later on, I required to day board him for a number of hours a few times. It ends up he was more than pleased to go into the veterinarian’s office where he had recently lived in a cage for 2 months. He was excited to see his buddies again. I was pleased to learn that these trips also operated to make riding in the car a delighted activity.

You’ll observe that some of this training wasn’t “properly timed” desensitization and counterconditioning. Often, for instance, when I turned the engine on, Lewis was already getting food before the novel sound and vibration occurred. For some pets, I may have needed to get an assistant to give the food after some occasions in this progression. However the above strategy worked for Lewis. Even though the food often preceded some occasions, in all cases, he got food after getting in the automobile. I believe that set the major association.

Lewis looking comfy in the cage, if a little bored Tweaks to the Final Regular Slowly, I switched from the food toy to tossing a handful of loose treats into the cage after he got in. However at that point, the location had become the

significant reinforcer. There was one more possible reinforcer in play. He enjoyed to sniff around the back seat before getting into the dog crate. He is a curious and “nosey” fellow. I believed, why not? I made it part of our regimen. Smelling around strengthens getting in the car itself and strolling onto the seat, not into the crate. However it’s enjoyable for him. I ensure there is absolutely nothing unsafe for dogs back there.

This process occurred over one month, in March 2022, with about seven sessions.

    Obstacle: Driving by Fireworks

About six months after Lewis became delighted riding in the automobile, I required to take him with me on a long drive at night to get my partner as she got discharged from the hospital. This was the first time he had remained in the cars and truck at night, and I think the oncoming headlights fretted him. (I understand from experience that he can see out the front windscreen.) He vocalized for a while, but calmed down rapidly. He seemed fairly relaxed even after he completed his food toy.

Then, one of those awful coincidences happened. It was early December. I live in a state capital city. There was something much even worse than headlights: we had to drive right by a city-sized fireworks display. I didn’t know it then, however it was the Christmas lighting ceremony at the state Capitol. I understood he could see the fireworks, then when we got close, he might likewise hear them. They were being set off straight below the elevated street we were on.

He began scratching at the door of the dog crate. He panted and whimpered the remainder of the method. It was a difficult drive, and I couldn’t stop. We were both stressed out.

We had to wait when we got to the hospital. I was wary of taking him out of the automobile because I feared he may worry and try to slip his harness. But I felt I needed to get him out in case he required to remove in stress. It worked out. We walked around a bit, and he relaxed. He didn’t even need to poop.

Then we both returned in the vehicle, and I left him loose with me, so as not to extend crate time.

My partner got released, and this cheered him up. The trip home wasn’t as dreadful for him as the ride to the healthcare facility. However the food toy I had actually saved for him was a Kong and still frozen, so he couldn’t access it all during the trip. He tuned up a couple of times to whimper, but quieted down when we talked soothingly to him.

I’m happy for Lewis’ resilience. The fireworks trip might have been a massive obstacle. However Lewis wasn’t reluctant to ride in the automobile the next time. Whew!

This is the sort of fun that made automobile journeys the golden ticket Aggravation Shouting I have a brand-new complication. Considering that we often drive to enjoyable locations with enjoyable people, Lewis now gets agitated when we get to a destination. He squeals and batters the cage door.

I haven’t exercised a prepare for that yet, however I’ll keep you posted. There is constantly a new challenge!
